Thursday, May 21

Our first full day of events.  In the morning we went to the Musee de Cluny, Musee national du Moyen Age (Art of the Middle Ages).  Picture below.  The Museum is made up of a 15th century Gothic mansion attached to the remnants and ruins of a Roman bath.  We then went on a little walking tour that included the oldest church in Paris, St. Julien le Pauvre, and then the very interesting St. Severin, a mostly late gothic structure (note the flamboyant tracery in the last semicircular window in the picture of the facade above).  After lunch in the St. Michel district, we toured St. Chappelle, built by Louis IX (St. Louis) to house his most precious relics acquired during the crusades.  It is a symphony of stained glass.  I think everyone was impressed.   The picture here doesn't do it justice, but you get the idea.

AND, as you can see in our new group picture below on the steps of the Ministry of Justice, we were joined by Maggie who successfully resolved her passport issue and got here.  She showed some real resourcefulness to get that all done on her own, including negotiating Paris public transportation to get to the hotel--BRAVO!

After St. Chappelle we toured the inside of Notre Dame.  Tomorrow--Day 1 of 2 days in the Louvre!
